Controlled Substance Policy

Class III & V Drugs

We have a strict policy on controlled substance prescription refills.

  • We will need documentation of prior records, imaging and health records outlining the work up and etiology of pain.
  • It is our standard practice and the law to check your pharmacy records on the Virginia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. Prescribing you a controlled substance is at the sole discretion of the doctor.
  • Our practice will not fill any controlled prescription for more than 7 days, unless a urine drug test and prior documentation is received and reviewed by the doctor and prescription’s beneficial outweigh risks to the patient.
  • A urine drug test will be needed prior to controlled substance being prescribed.

Our practice will also not routinely refill class III-V drugs including Vicodin, Tylenol w/ Codeine, Suboxone, Ketamine, Anabolic Steroids, Opioids, Xanax, Soma, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, Restoril, Halcion, Versed, Tranxene, Gabapentin, Phenergan w/ Codeine, etc. We will also no refill high dose mental health medications without prior health records and behavioral health specialist/psychiatrist documentation.

We believe in doing no harm and want to always do the right thing as it is a moral obligation we have undertaken to ensure you best health outcomes. We would be happy to provide counseling and referral to pain management clinic and psychiatrist to evaluate underlying condition and refills on Class III & V drugs.
